To reach the Banda Islands, your journey begins with an online booking: first a flight to Jakarta, then another onward to Ambon ; from the domestic terminal - light rail transfer. If you need to wait then there are many cafes inside the terminal plus a pod hotel. From Ambon, there are two choices—by small plane or by Pelni ship.
If you choose the plane, pack light. Only hand luggage plus 10 kilograms is allowed, and seats vanish fast. With just ten spots available on the weekly flight, you’ll need to book several months ahead. The flight itself lasts about 50 minutes, skimming over scattered islands and open sea. If you fly, consider staying at a guesthouse near the airport in the Tawiri district before setting off.
Landing by plane at Banda Airfield with small plane flight from Ambon
the Pelni ship
The sea route is a different kind of voyage. The Pelni passenger ship departs Ambon at least once a week—usually on Friday or Saturday—and returns on Sunday, arriving back early Monday morning. The crossing takes around twelve hours, though the weather can stretch or shorten the journey. If you travel by ship, you can stay at one of the budget hotels in walking distance from Ambon Harbour. Onboard, you’ll be given bottled water and one or two meals as the vessel pushes through the night toward Banda.
Before you set out, it’s wise to arrange your onward ticket out of Indonesia. Depending on whether you return from Banda by boat or by the small plane, flights out of Ambon can be limited, and securing your exit in advance keeps the adventure running smoothly.
